Middletown Man Arrested After Skateboarding Away from Police

Casey Austin Quarry, 26, of 11 Murphy Circle in Middletown, was arrested around 2:21 p.m. Monday on charges of obstructing a roadway, obstructing an officer and having a toy vehicle in the roadway.

An officer working out of the COP office on Thames Street reported seeing a skateboarder ride through the Bank of America lot then down Thames Street in the middle of the road.

About 15 minutes later, the officer heard a skateboard coming down Dearborn Street, and as it turned, he noticed it was the same man, later identified as Quarry. The officer reportedly motioned for him to stop, but the skateboarder refused, staring at the officer as he rode past him onto Thames Street and into traffic. According to the report, a vehicle traveling south on the street had to slow abruptly and swerve to avoid hitting the skateboarder.

The officer drove in his cruiser down Coddington Wharf  in pursuit of Quarry, until he picked up his skateboard and began walking quickly toward the water. After he reached the end of the roadway and noticed he had few places to continue, Quarry allegedly stopped for the officer.

The officer questioned why he hadn't stopped earlier, to which Quarry allegedly replied, "I'm not telling you anything. I was just riding my board and that's no crime."

The officer explained that he could be cited for operating a toy vehicle in the roadway and asked for his name and date of birth, but Quarry refused to give any information. When told he could be arrested for his actions, the 26-year-old allegedly told the officer to go ahead and do so.

Police then escorted Quarry to the cruiser and took him to the station for booking.

Warrant Arrest

Justin Donald Richardson, 22, of 29 Ann Street Apt. 1 in Newport, was arrested around 2:45 p.m. Monday for a Second District Court bench warrant for failure to pay fines.

Richardson was stopped near America's Cup Avenue and Long Wharf after an officer noticed his vehicle had a defective rear tail light.
