Teen Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Sister

A 15-year-old Newport teen was arrested around 7 p.m. Monday on a simple assault charge.

Police responded to the teen's home on Vernon Avenue after a caller reported hearing a verbal argument coming from the residence. Upon arrival, officers attempted to speak with the teen, but he told them people needed to "mind their own business." Police spoke to the victim, the teen's 13-year-old sister, who said her brother was threatening to kill her while pulling her hair to get her to the ground. The mother said her son is constantly hitting his sister and that she feels she can no longer control him. She told police that if he wasn't receptive, then she wanted to press charges for the assault.

Police again tried to speak to the teen, but he reportedly wouldn't answer questions or look at the officers. He was handcuffed and brought to the station for booking. The mother said she didn't have transportation to come pick up her son, so police took him home around 8:10 p.m.

Man Arrested After Giving False Name to Police

Michael Lassiter, 35, of 90 Girard Avenue Apt. 127, was arrested around 4:50 p.m. Monday on charges of obstruction of an officer and a 2nd District Court bench warrant.

Officers were dispatched to Festival Field Apartments around 4:19 p.m. and upon arrival heard a man and woman screaming inside the apartment. Police announced their arrival, but it took approximately one minute before anyone answered the door.

The woman answered the door and said she'd been in an argument with her boyfriend, "Chris Rose." When police asked where he was, the woman said he'd exited the rear door, but that she needed to pick up her son and go.

Police began checking the apartment and reportedly found Rose behind a chair, sweating profusely. Officers handcuffed him and asked for ID, but he said he didn't have any on him.

Dispatch ran a check and discovered that Rose's real name is Michael Lassiter. He then admitted to police that he knew he had a warrant out for his arrest and had been giving a false name for some time now. Because the investigation didn't find any evidence of a domestic crime, officers arrested him on the warrant and on obstruction.
