Newport Police Log: Weekend of Aug. 26 to 28

Man Arrested After Allegedly Ripping Mirror Off Vehicle

William R. Hurney, 43, of 18 Homer Street Apt. A, was arrested around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on charges of domestic disorderly conduct, domestic vandalism, simple assault and resisting arrest.

Officers were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of a disorderly man who'd ripped a side mirror off a car parked in the driveway, then parked his vehicle behind the car to prevent it from driving off. Upon arrival, officers encountered Hurney, who admitted to the vandalism, stating that he'd had a problem with his son and ripped the mirror off. He then reportedly said "we're done here, I'm going to bed" and tried to go back into his apartment. As he began to slam the door shut, the officer placed his foot in the door to block it, prompting Hurney to yell at him. Hurney then swung the door open and walked into the kitchen. The officer noted that because the kitchen likely contained knives and other weapons, he grabbed onto Hurney's left arm and pulled him away. That prompted Hurney to throw a punch toward the officer. The officer eventually got Hurney's arms into an arm bar, then another officer arrived to help handcuff him.

Police spoke to Hurney's son, who said his father is repeatedly drunk and constantly pounding on the back door, threatening him and his mother. He said that night, his father grabbed onto the driver's side mirror of the vehicle, tore it off, then sarcastically said "oops."

Hurney was transported to the station for booking, and reportedly spit and swore in the back of the cruiser while en route.

Man Arrested for Allegedly Breaking in Door

Jose Antonio Medina, 25, of 7 Ranger Road in Newport, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. Sunday on charges of domestic breaking and entering and domestic simple assault.

Police were dispatched to 22 West Evans Street around 9:30 p.m. for a report that Medina had just kicked in the front door of an apartment and entered it.

Upon arrival, officers could hear a woman yelling inside. She then pulled the front door open and attempted to exit, but Medina reportedly prevented her by placing his body in front of hers and grabbing her. Police grabbed Medina and ordered both parties to stop.

The woman told police that she'd locked the doors after hearing that Medina was headed over, but that he broke the front door to gain entry. He told police that she had asked him to come over, and said he didn't damage the door or prevent her from leaving, despite officers witnessing the latter. Medina was arrested and taken to the station for booking.

During that same incident, Natalie Anel Lembert, 18, of 242 Hillside Avenue in Newport, was also arrested on a charge of intimidation of a witness. Police say that while they were sitting in the cruiser on the scene, Lembert ran up to the victim and began yelling at her for getting her brother in trouble.

Newport Man Cited for Trying to Charge for Parking on his Property

Stephen M. McGuire, 48, of 3 Cliff Avenue in Newport, was cited around 1:50 p.m. Saturday for attempting to charges individuals for parking in his driveway.

According to the report, McGuire had been told earlier in the day that he was not to solicit parking on his property. Plainclothes officers drove by later and saw him standing on his property with orange cones and an umbrella and chair. Police say McGuire asked them if they wanted to park for $10. When the officers identified themselves, McGuire said he was under the impression that what he was doing was OK so long as he took signs down advertising the parking. McGuire admitted to charging for parking the past couple of weekends.

Marijuana Charges

Gabriel Nmi Merced, 28, of Providence, and Brendan Thomas Barrett, 22, of Cranston, were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana around 8:45 p.m. Friday. An officer observed their vehicle parked with the engine running on Hillside Avenue near Sunset Boulevard. When the officer approached and asked what they were doing, he reportedly spotted a small bag of marijuana as they opened the glove box. Police later found three more small baggies of marijuana in Merced's right pants pocket.

Middletown Man Arrested for Disturbing the Peace

Alastair S. Pfeiffer, 21, of 42 Third Beach Road in Middletown, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. Monday on charges of disturbing the peace at Thames and Brewer streets.

An officer was notified of a motor vehicle violation at 1:20 a.m. in the area of Thames and McAllister streets. Upon arrival, police found a man with no shirt on, who began yelling at the officer to slow down his cruiser. He then lunged toward the roadway as if he were jumping in front of the cruiser. The officer says he had to rapidly slow down and swerve to the left, and that he noticed others on Thames Street crossing the street to get away from Pfeiffer. Officers say when they approached Pfeiffer he was belligerent and antagonistic.

Man Arrested After Causing Scene at Mother's House

Cornelius R. Ibbotson, 27, of 12 Mount Vernon St. Apt. 4 in Newport, was arrested around 1:45 a.m. Saturday at Mount Vernon Condos on charges of threats to public officials, domestic vandalism and disorderly threats. Officers were dispatched to the complex for a report that Ibbotson was throwing items around his mother's house and that she wanted him removed. Upon arrest, officers say Ibbotson threatened to hurt police and continued on a tirade throughout the booking process.

Public Urination Citation

Matthew Carries, 26, of Simsbury, CT, was cited at 12:11 a.m. Saturday for public urination at the Waites Wharf parking lot.

Noise Violations

Jonathan Champlin, 23, of 75 Mill Pond Road Apt. 1 in Exeter, and Matthew Bouthillier, 23, of 14 Hemlock Drive in Exeter, were both cited for noise violations after a loud party at their apartment at Eastbourne Lodge, 80 Rhode Island Avenue, Apt. 1, at 12:45 a.m. Saturday.

Drinking Charges

• John J. Padien, 24, of 521 Lafayette in North Kingstown, was arrested on a drinking while driving charge at 5:20 a.m. Saturday at the intersection of Broadway and Newport Avenue.

• Charles Rider, 29, of Marion, MA, was cited for drinking in public at Easton's Beach at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

• Sean M. Hastings, 29, of 9 Plymouth, MA, was cited for drinking in public at Easton's Beach at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

• Diane Yarrow, 46, of Boston, was arrested for drinking while driving at 11:45 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Thames and Mill streets.

• Adam Lola, 28, of Franklin, MA, was cited for drinking in public at 4:27 p.m. Sunday at Easton's Beach.

• Todd Wallick, 44, of Renton, WA, was cited for drinking in public at 5:48 p.m. Sunday at Storer Park.

Warrant Charges

Robert Ernest Champagne, 41, of 22 Annandale Road in Newport, was arrested around 2:25 p.m. Saturday on an arrest & affidavit warrant and a district court capias warrant out of Kent County.
