Youth Arrested for Allegedly Stealing Shirts from Walmart

Two Newport juveniles were arrested Thursday evening on charges of larceny.

Police responded to the Walmart on Connell Highway around 6:15 p.m. for a report that the store's loss prevention officer had seen the two juveniles, one age 12 and the other 15, stealing items from the store. After observing them put merchandise into a bag, the officer followed them out of the store, stopped them, then escorted them back inside, where he found 12 shirts inside their bag, totaling $82 in value.

Both juveniles told police they were threatened by a woman who told them to get clothes for her. Officers looked at the shirts and noticed they varied in size and didn't appear to be for one particular individual.

The juveniles were released to their mothers.

Assault Charge

Keith A. Upshur, 45, of 6 Second Street in Newport, was arrested around 5:40 p.m. Thursday on charges of domestic simple assault and refusal to relinquish a telephone.

According to the report, Upshur's girlfriend reported to police that he'd assaulted her the day before. She said she tried to dial 911 during the incident, but Upshur grabbed her cell phone before she could hit send. The woman reported that she previously had a restraining order out against him, but recently canceled it.

Police put out a 24-hour pickup for Upshur and arrested him at his place of employment.

Warrant Charge

Eric Noel Anderson, 45, of 3 Congdon Avenue in Newport, was arrested around 12:55 p.m. Thursday for a Middletown arrest and affadavit warrant.

An officer patrolling the Broadway area near City Hall observed Anderson, who police knew had been arrested several times before and was known to not appear in court. The officer ran a check and confirmed that Anderson had a municipal court warrant out for his arrest in Middletown. Middletown police were contacted and responded to pick him up.
