Newport Police Log: Middletown Woman Charged with Cocaine Possession

The following reports detail the arrests made by the Newport Police Department on Monday, July 26, through the early morning hours of Tuesday, July 27. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Middletown Woman Charged with Cocaine Possession

Jennie A. Edwards, 30, of 582 Turner Road in Middletown, was arrested around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday on charges of possessing and concealing cocaine and prescription pills.

Police said they were patrolling Park Holm when they observed a man leaning in the passenger window of a car, which the officer found suspicious. The officer stopped and spoke to the man, who said he had just given Edwards a ride home from 7-Eleven and that he had nothing illegal on him. Police say officers then went to speak with Edwards, who said the man had given her a ride home from Rolling Green and that they were just talking before he left. Because their stories were inconsistent, police said they found the situation more suspicious. Checking the floor of Edward's car, officers found two plastic baggies containing a powdery substance consistent with cocaine and three orange and brown capsules. Police tested the substances and confirmed that it was cocaine and Gabapentin.

Teens Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting Thames Street Visitors

Two 13-year-old and 15-year-old Newport boys were arrested around 10 p.m. Monday on an assault charge outside Via Via on Thames Street.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 9:18 p.m. after an 18-year-old Roseville, CA, man said that he and his girlfriend's family were walking down Thames Street when a group of five boys began talking trash to him. The man said one caused him to lose his balance and fall to the ground, while the group went running off. The victim suffered a gash below his right eye as well as swelling to the area, but refused medical treatment.

Newport Man Arrested for Trespassing at 7-Eleven

Steven Bruce Cox, 51, of 15 Meeting Street in Newport, was arrested on a charge of willful trespassing around 1 a.m. Monday. Officers were dispatched to the 7-Eleven at 95 Broadway, where an employee told police that Cox had been causing problems at the store, bothering customers and stealing merchandise. The store had filed the report with police two hours before and advised Cox not to trespass. Police said Cox returned and was found looking through the dumpsters on the scene.

Tiverton Man Arrested for Allegedly Violating No-Contact Order

Jason M. Torres, 27, of 7 Hooper Street in Tiverton, was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Monday for violating a no-contact order against his wife. Officers were dispatched to the Women's Resource Center for a report that he was outside in an SUV.

The wife told police that Torres was arrested for domestic violence in September 2009 and that Tiverton police had told him to have no contact until the incident was resolved in court. The wife said Torres had violated the no-contact order several times and that she drove him to Newport Monday to meet with the judge to resolve the issue. When a counselor at the Women's Resource Center noticed he was outside, they called Newport Police to come resolve the matter.

Local Man Arrested for Allegedly Making Threats

Danny J. Blake, 45, of 9 Roseneath Avenue in Newport, was arrested around 9:15 p.m. Monday on a disorderly threat charge.

Police were dispatched to 131 Girard Avenue around 8:30 p.m. after the resident reported that Blake had come outside his home and yelled for him to come outside and fight. The man told police that he instructed Blake to leave, but that he returned and the two exchanged words on the porch.

Police were told the incident arose from the two having a falling out. Blake told police that the other man had appeared at his home on Saturday and was told not to set foot on the property again.

The victim played police cell phone voicemails Blake left him, which stated he was going to kill him the next time he trespassed. Blake admitted to making the calls and was arrested for the threats.
