Newport Police Reports: Weekend of July 30-Aug. 1

The following reports detail the arrests made by the Newport Police Department from Friday, July 30, through Sunday, August 1. Descriptions of all events are based solely on police officer reports provided to Patch.

Pawtucket Man Arrested After Rushing Stage at George Thorogood Concert

Paul M. Dias, 36, of 85 Chaplin in Pawtucket, was arrested about 10 p.m. Friday on two charges of simple assault and one for resisting arrest.

Officers on paid detail at the Newport Yachting Center for the George Thorogood & The Destroyers concert say they observed Dias run toward the stage. Security guards attempted to stop him, but according to police, Dias continued toward the stage and told them not to touch him. Prior to officers intervening, Dias reportedly pushed and struck one of the security guards. Officers say when they got there, Dias was swinging his arms. When they told him he was under arrest, he replied "No." After a brief struggle, police say they were able to handcuff Dias, but that he continued to incite the crowd by saying he was being touched by the "pigs." He reportedly snorted like a pig at one point, according to police.

Other Assault Charges

• Sergio Iellamo, 39, of 51 Carroll Avenue in Newport, was arrested around 8:46 p.m. Sunday on charges of domestic simple assault and possession of marijuana.
  
  Police were dispatched to the home on a report of a verbal dispute taking place between a man and woman there. Upon arrival, police say a witness told them that Iellamo grabbed his wife, a 51-year-old Newport woman, and pulled her inside the residence. According to the report, one officer separated them and brought Iellamo outside to sit on the stairs, where he said he wanted a lawyer and that he wasn't going to follow officers' instructions. Police say he began to clench his fists for safety. They then handcuffed him, patted him down and put him in the rear patrol vehicle. During booking, officers say they found a small amount of a green, leafy substance in Iellamo's wallet, which tested positive for marijuana.
• Christopher George Goodwin, 22, of Orange, CT, was arrested at 2:25 a.m. Saturday on charges of simple assault. Officers say they were dispatched to West Narragansett Avenue and Thames Street for a noise complaint and that when they approached the house, they could hear females screaming inside. As they got closer, police say they heard things being broken. They entered the home, located at 14 West Narragansett Avenue Apt. 3, and noticed one man walking out with blood on his clothing. Officers say Goodwin told them he'd just punched a guy in the face over a "stupid" dispute.
• Doreen M. Bouchard, 49, of Bristol, CT, was arrested about 8:10 p.m. Saturday on a charge of assaulting an ER nurse at Newport Hospital. Police say Bouchard was agitated and kicked the nurse twice in the stomach and spit in her face, while yelling obscenities. The nurse suffered no injuries.
• Peter William Jutras, 54, of 1 Brown School Road in Glocester, was arrested on a domestic assault charge around 9:39 p.m. Saturday near Thames and Dearborn streets. According to the police report, Jutras and his girlfriend were in town having dinner when they got into an argument over family matters. Police were told Jutras tried to take the keys from his girlfriend because she was intoxicated, but that she struggled to get away, at which point he put her into a headlock. Police say a couple of unbiased witnesses provided further details about the incident, leading to Jutras' arrest.

Massachusetts Man Cited for Loud Exhaust

Peter E. Odette, 49, of 8 Woodcliffe Road in Canton, MA, was cited around 5:35 p.m. Sunday on a charge of motor vehicle noise.

Officers on patrol on Ella Terrace near Ocean Avenue said they observed Odette's vehicle turn onto Ridge Road making an excessive amount of exhaust noise. The report says they stopped him on Ridge Road near OceanCliff and spoke with him. According to police, Odette said the exhaust was not original to the vehicle. The officer could not locate an EPA label on the exhaust, as required by ordinance. He was issued a municipal court summons.

Portsmouth Woman Charged with Reckless Driving

Alyssa Kali Labonte, 20, of 2340 E. Main Road in Portsmouth, was arrested around 2:17 a.m. Sunday for reckless driving and simple assault charges.

Officers on bike patrol near the intersection of Thames and Ann streets say they observed a loud crash come from the St. Spyridon's Church parking lot. When they rode onto Brewer Street, they say they watched a dark-colored 4-door vehicle backing out at a high rate of speed. According to the report, 20 to 30 people were in the street at the time, and when the vehicle backed up it almost collided with them. Several were forced to jump out of the way. Officers say they watched the vehicle speed through the stop sign and turn north onto Spring Street, then turn quickly onto Golden Hill Street without using a turn signal. An officer initiated a motor vehicle stop with Labonte, who he said was not wearing a seatbelt. She attempted to leave the area, according to police, but was handcuffed. When she was informed of what officers had observed, they say she began to speak irrationally and deny that she was in a vehicle near Brewer Street. As officers placed her in the rear of their vehicle, they say she struggled and kicked one of the officer's upper thighs, but that they eventually got her into the patrol car. Labonte was issued a summons for leaving the scene, highway ficture, operating a motor vehicle without evidence of insurance and a seat belt and a summons for reckless driving.

Local Man Charged with Narcotics Possession

David T. Leskowitz, 53, of 6 Pleasant Street Apt. 2 in Newport, was arrested around 1 p.m. Saturday on charges of possessing narcotics.

Police say they were dispatched to 7 Ann Street for an anonymous report that there was a vehicle parked outside with drugs in it. Upon arrival, officers say they observed the vehicle, which was unoccupied, blocking several private parking spaces across the street. They were unable to contact the registered owner and requested a tow truck. Shortly after, police say Leskowitz came out and said he'd move the vehicle. When officers informed him of why they'd responded, they say he told them they could search his car, which they did, but didn't find anything illegal. Police later found a black pill bottle tucked inside a front window frame, containing 15 different prescription pills, including Valium. Police say Leskowitz initially denied owning the pills, but after being questioned again, he got nervous and admitted they were his.

Newport Man Arrested for Trespassing

Stephen Bruce Cox, 51, of 15 Meeting Street in Newport, was arrested about 6 a.m. Sunday on a charge of willful trespassing at the Cumberland Farms on Broadway.

Officers were dispatched there for a report that Cox had just entered the store, despite having an active willful trespass order there. When they arrived, officers say they began checking the area and located Cox at the Dunkin Donuts on Broadway. The report says Cox told police he opened the door of the store to ask the clerk for ice, but that she told him he wasn't allowed in, so he left. Dispatch confirmed that Cox had a willful trespass order for Cumberland Farms.

Public Drinking Charges

• John Joseph Coriander, 60, of 15 Meeting Street in Newport, was cited for drinking in public at Equality Park around 2:45 p.m. Friday.
• Pamela Ann Taylor, 54, of 66 Girard Avenue Apt. 220 in Newport, was cited for drinking in public outside Newport's City Hall around 9 p.m. Friday.
• Darnell Lamb, 41, of 160 Broad Street in Providence, was cited for drinking in public outside Newport's City Hall around 9 p.m. Friday.
• Paul David Napolitano, 58, of 15 Meeting Street in Newport, was cited for drinking in public at Broadway and Friendship streets around 8:08 a.m. Saturday.
• Ernest G. Jones, 58, of 15 Meeting Street in Newport, was arrested around 8:20 a.m. Saturday on charges of disorderly threats, obstructing an officer and drinking in public. Officers report they saw Jones sitting with several others at the RIPTA bus shelter passing around a vodka bottle. When officers announced they would be cited for drinking in public, they say Jones stood up, responded with obscenities and said he wasn't going to do anything they asked of him. When officers asked him for an ID to issue the summons, they say he repeatedly flailed his arms in an aggressive manner and said that he hadn't done anything wrong.
• Kelly Luchs 24, of Glastonbury, CT, was cited around 1: 50 p.m. Sunday for drinking in public near Wellington Avenue and King Park.
• Robert Edward Symonds, 63, of 102 Park Holm Apt. 7 in Newport, was cited about 4 p.m. Sunday for drinking in public near the post office on Broadway.
• Sarah Abarbanel, 21, of 90 Sheldon Street Apt. 1 in Providence, was cited around 4:50 p.m. Sunday for drinking in public at Bailey's Beach East.

Warrant Charge

Christopher John Hathaway, 29, of 10 Homer Street Apt. 3, was arrested around 10:20 p.m. Friday for a superior court bench warrant related to a violation of a previous probation.

Noise Complaint

Conor MC Gowan, of Ireland, was cited about 1:48 a.m. Saturday for noise at 34 Ann Street Apt. 2.
