Newport Seniors Trail Peers in SAT Scores
The city's seniors have lagged behind the state average the past three years.
Newport students' SAT scores have dipped slightly over the last three years, but so too has the number of students taking the college entrance exam.
That's according to the Rhode Island Department of Education, which released on Monday a breakdown of the state's performance on the SAT from 2008 to 2010.
According to RIDE, the average scores for Newport seniors in 2010 were 450 in reading, 453 in math and 451 in writing. The state average overall was 485 in reading, 488 in math and 478 in writing. Students can score a maximum of 800 points in each section.

Seventy-two Newport seniors took the test in 2010, down slightly from 75 in 2009. Ninety-four seniors took the SAT in 2008. In total statewide, 5,718 seniors took the exam in 2010.
