Newport Council Approves Bicycle Ordinance Overhaul (upriseri.com) — Newport's City Council has approved a sweeping overhaul of bicycle ordinances and accepted more than $6 million in new federal road safety funds, shaping how bikes and e-bikes are used citywide. Councilors also advanced Cliff Walk fencing, dog park improvements, a major Homeland Security grant for a new K-9, and entertainment licenses for Tavern on Broadway, while honoring local volunteers and a longtime police veteran.
   

2. NUWC Newport tells defense industry it wants "radical collaboration" (whatsupnewp.com) — Newport's Naval Undersea Warfare Center is inviting private companies into closer "radical collaboration," opening biweekly office hours, sharing long-range contract forecasts, and planning new tech challenges like Narragansett Sentinel. Leaders say they want local and national industry partners to help tackle undersea sensing, robotics, cybersecurity, and subsea infrastructure protection, with a classified industry day at Division Newport coming this fall.
   

3. 'Situations' returns to Jane Pickens Theater on Sept. 30 (whatsupnewp.com) — Newport film lovers can catch the indie comedy "Situations" back at Jane Pickens Theatre on September 30, followed by a live Q&A with filmmaker Greg Vrotsos and 9 Central Film Festival founder Jack Galvin. The screening caps the movie's national roadshow and kicks off a stretch of independent film programming in one of Newport's best-known cultural venues.
   

4. From the Painted Ladies to the 'Practical Magic' House, Queen Anne Victorians Are Pop Culture's Darling (beaumontenterprise.com) — Queen Anne Victorian homes are back in the spotlight, and Newport plays a starring role as home to the first U.S. example, the William Watts Sherman House, now part of Salve Regina University. The piece traces how ornate features like turrets, wraparound porches, and bold colors evolved, while noting the enduring charm—and upkeep challenges—of these historic homes.
