Newport Fire Station as Location for Harm Reduction Vending Machine (newportthisweek.com) — Newport's City Council has approved placing a harm reduction vending machine at the fire department headquarters on West Marlborough Street, offering Narcan, fentanyl test strips, and basic supplies to registered clients. Supporters say it will quietly connect vulnerable residents to services, while some councilors worry it appears to endorse drug use, setting up a closely watched one-year pilot.
   

2. Newport Will Not Own Flock Drone (newportthisweek.com) — Newport has approved a three-year, $125,000‑per‑year contract for a Flock first‑responder drone that the city will use but not own, raising questions about data control and procurement. Police say Newport retains operational video data while Flock keeps certain metadata, and the city tightly limits which outside agencies can access local license‑plate and drone information.
   

3. Sheep, llama take on lawn care duties at Fort Adams State Park (wpri.com) — Newport visitors to Fort Adams State Park will now spot a herd of sheep and one protective llama helping clear invasive plants and improve soil health as part of a new DEM grazing project. The animals will be working around the fort through the fall, and officials are asking people to keep a safe distance from both the herd and the electric fencing.
   

4. Fishermen catch ocean sunfish off Newport coast (wpri.com) — Two local fishermen recently encountered a massive ocean sunfish just off the Newport coast and carefully freed it from their fishing line before letting it swim away. The unusual sighting highlights how mola mola seasonally visit Rhode Island waters and can easily be mistaken for sharks when their large dorsal fins break the surface.
