Unconventional Art Finds Home in Broadway District
The new Gypset gallery had its opening reception Friday night.
Tara Malchiodi, Newport resident and proprietor of the newly-opened Gypset Gallery, named the space as a nod to the "Gypset" maxim, which she feels is akin to her general outlook in life.
"The book 'Gypset Style' encompasses unconventional thinkers who are more or less doing their own thing," Malchiodi said. "I was inspired because I like to see people who pursue originality and authenticity. I think this idea is well represented here through people who have their own aspirations and I would love the opportunity to showcase it."
Gypset Gallery's maiden voyage was an opening reception on Friday called "First," which showcased street artwork by POIS, contemporary pieces by artist Miles Small, and jewelry by Diana Hall. Colorful sidewalk chalk on both Broadway and Spring Street proclaimed the opening, leading guests to the gallery at 3 Stone Street. The good vibes were plentiful as friends of Small and Malchiodi dropped in, mingling among passersby who drifted in from the street. Gallery-goers spilled onto the street, where paper bag luminaries created an ethereal grow along the sidewalk.

Although quite small, the space is vibrant and fosters an intimate and convivial atmosphere; the brightly painted red floor invokes a casual chicness well suited to the current installment. The pieces by POIS and Small were born through very different inspirations, styles, and mediums; however, they harmonize well in this particular space. Miles' oil-on-canvas pieces are ablaze with hues of red and orange wisping and twisting to shape hazy forms with affecting, bespectacled eyes. In contrast, notorious POIS tags up various mediums, including street signs, which exemplify street art.Â
It was inevitable that Malchiodi would own her own business; a consummate mover and shaker, the gallery is an outlet for her free-spirited whimsy, whip smart brains, and penchant for entrepreneurship.

"I have always wanted to own my own business and have been lucky enough to meet really talented people," she said. "The opportunity presented itself with this space and I think a venue up off Broadway is great, especially as an up and coming area … I want to represent works apart from what people think Newport is. There are a lot of talented local artists who need to be supported."
