Encaustic painting uses a heated mixture of beeswax, colored pigments, and damar resin to create translucent layers of imagery on wooden supports. This process is both versatile and forgiving. In this workshop, students will learn safe studio practices, how to prepare a wooden panel, and basic techniques for building layers of drawn, collaged, and stenciled imagery on their own wooden panel. Students will also learn to use tools to carve and scrape back into the wax, often revealing surprising structures below the surface. Each student will take home a painting that will hold the lines, marks, and images from the two-day workshop.

Little to no experience needed. Artists familiar with encaustic are also encouraged to attend. Contact instructor prior to registering with any questions or concerns.

David Hazlett lives in Rumford, RI and has a painting studio in Pawtucket. He has his M.F.A. in Printmaking and from A.S.U, and has worked as a professional artist and teacher for the past twelve years.
