Longtime NK School Employee, Volunteer, Dies after Cancer Battle

Mary C. Braman, 61, of North Kingstown, passed away peacefully at home accompanied by her loving husband after a short but courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

She was married to her beloved husband, David for over 37 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her loving children and grandchildren, son Donald Braman of Tacoma, WA, daughter Courtney Nestor and her husband John, their children, Vienne, Nicholas and Nathaniel of Jolon, CA, daughter Abigail Miller and her husband Josh of Wilmington, NC and son Christopher Braman of Providence, RI. S

he was the daughter of the late Thomas Mitchell and is survived by her mother Catherine Mitchell and five siblings and numerous nephews and nieces. She also is survived by her faithful dog, Otis.

Mary, born in Glasgow, Scotland, was proud of becoming an American Citizen. She was a long time resident of North Kingstown and a graduate of Warwick Veterans High School. She was employed by A& F Mailing, Cumberland Farms and North Kingstown School Department. After 20 years with the North Kingstown School Department, she retired due to her illness.

Mary’s focus was always on her children, staying at home while the children were young and volunteered working with and advocating for children and others in need. She loved and was very proud of her children and grandchildren.

Over the years she volunteered in many capacities which included being a director at Little Red School House, a Girl Scout Leader, a Boy Scout Den Leader, an Eagle Scout Mentor, a Meals on Wheels driver, a Chairperson and board member of the North Kingstown Special Education Local Advisory Committee, a Chairperson and board member of the North Kingstown Task Force, a St. Francis DeSales Religious Education Teacher, a St. Francis DeSales Cleaning Crew Leader, and conceived of the name “Crafty Creations” for an after school craft club at Quidnessett Elementary School she taught.

While at Davisville Middle School she volunteered in many capacities to improve the school, including being a member of the Conflict Management Team, Anti-Bullying Committee, Gardening Club, Stop-Think Social Skills committee, School Improvement committee, Climate committee and Safe & Orderly committee. Mary also coordinated gifts and letters for our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and coordinated Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets and Gifts for families with financial hardships.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday September 13th at 10:00 am at St. Francis de Sales Church, School St., N. Kingstown. Burial will in Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery, N. Kingstown. Calling hours: Friday September 12th from 4-7 pm at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., E. Greenwich. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the North Kingstown Food Pantry or to Crossroads Rhode Island.
