Man Registers .312 Blood Alcohol Reading during North Kingstown DUI Arrest

Police said the East Providence man was stopped for swerving on Tower Hill Road.

A 50-year-old East Providence man is facing charges of driving under the influence after he allegedly drove erratically in North Kingstown and registered a blood alcohol reading nearly four times the legal limit with a breathalyzer.

Police said Timothy J. McCarthy, of 2404 Pawtucket Ave., East Providence, was pulled over on Tower Hill Road on April 12 at around 9 p.m. after drifting in his lane and crossing the white fog lane and double yellow center lane

McCarthy smelled like alcohol, according to a police report, and showed signs of intoxication including slurred speech and difficulty standing.

McCarthy said he drank five Budweisers at Twin Willows in Narragansett and was on his way to Providence to drop off his passenger. He failed a field sobriety test and registered a .312 blood alcohol reading during a preliminary breath test at the scene.

Police said it is McCarthy’s second DUI offense. He later refused a chemical test after his arrest, which brought about an additional refusal charge.
