Police Chase Car Theft Suspects In North Kingstown No Arrest Yet

Sergeant Hopkins called off the chase after police said one suspect got out of the car and pointed a gun at Hopkins' police cruiser.

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI — Jamestown Police Wednesday morning called off chasing suspects who they said stole three cars overnight Tuesday.

Police Sergeant Jason Hopkins told Newport Daily News he stopped the pursuit because it was causing a dangerous situation on the road.

Police said they started receiving calls around 5 a.m., about the stolen vehicles. About 45 minutes later, Hopkins said he saw the stolen vehicles driving on Beacon Avenue.

Jamestown Police Chief Edward Mello told Newport Daily News Hopkins chased the suspects over the Jamestown Bridge and into North Kingstown. Hopkins then called off the chase after police said one suspect got out of the car and pointed a gun at Hopkins' police cruiser before getting into a fourth car and driving away.

The one vehicle left behind was recovered by Jamestown Police. No arrests have been made at this time.

Police are asking that residents in North Kingstown and Jamestown keep their vehicles locked and keep any valuables locked at home.
