More Details Released On Victims Of Shooting At H.S. Hockey Game In Pawtucket

Three people died in a "targeted" shooting involving a family dispute and four more in critical condition, police said.

PAWTUCKET, RI — Three people died in a "targeted" shooting — that appeared to stem from a family dispute — inside a packed hockey arena in Pawtucket during a high school hockey game Monday afternoon.

As of 7 p.m., local officials have released few new details regarding the victims of the shooting, which happened at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket on Friday afternoon. Authorities have said the shooter is dead as well as two others, including one who died after arriving at an area hospital.

The shooter appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot, said police chief Tina Goncalves during a press conference late on Monday afternoon.

While there have been reports released of a young girl who was killed in the shooting, authorities have not confirmed this. Police did say during a press conference Monday that the victims appeared to be adults.

Meanwhile, a source with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told Fox News the shooter, a man, killed his wife and then shot two of his kids before killing himself. He also shot a third child who remains hospitalized.

Three shooting victims were in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital, according to media reports.

The names of the victims were not being released as local authorities worked Monday to notify members of their family first, police said late on Monday afternoon.

The Pawtucket Police Department responded to the reported shooting at about 2:30 p.m. The co-op hockey game was between Coventry-Johnston co-op and St. Raphael-Providence Country Day-North Providence-North Smithfield co-op, according to CBS 6 Albany.

"We were able to reunite everyone inside (the arena) with their families," Goncalves said during the Monday press conference.

The game was being live-streamed at the time of the shooting. Footage from the shooting showshockey players scrambling over the barrier between the ice rink and the stands as shots rang out inside and the crowd bolted for the door.

There are also reports now circulating regarding Good Samaritans in the stands who stepped up to help during the shooting, including a North Smithfield father who grabbed a gun out of the shooter's hands, according to media reports. The shooter, though, had a second gun, according to the report.

Late on Monday afternoon, the superintendent for North Providence Public Schools let families know that all of its students involved in the game "are safe." In the email to the school community, superintendent Joseph Goho wrote:

As you may have heard on the news this afternoon, there was a shooting that occurred at the Lynch ice rink in Pawtucket. The North Providence High School co-op hockey team which also includes North Smithfield, St. Raphael Academy, and Providence Country Day School were playing in a hockey game when the shooting involving spectators occurred around the start the first period. Fortunately, all students involved in the game are safe. At this point, all other information is preliminary and has not been confirmed officially, but it is important to inform everyone that our students, and the students from the other communities who participate on the co-op hockey team, are safe.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those involved in this tragic incident.

CBS 6 Albany is reporting no students or hockey players from any of the area schools were injured in the shooting. One of the schools was reportedly celebrating its Senior Night, according to media reports.

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said grief counseling and other services is being provided to those in attendance at the hockey game.

"These were high school kids who were doing an event, they were playing with their families watching, which should be a fun time, and it turned into this so it's got to be traumatic," Grebien said during a Monday press conference.

Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee offered his condolences to all those involved.
