Gun Found In Bushes By Warwick Little League Field After Report Of Armed Child: Cops

Police found the weapon after "officers learned that a firearm may have been discarded in the immediate area," police said.

WARWICK, RI — Officers found a firearm in the bushes near a Little League field after receiving a report of an armed child, police said.

Officers were sent to the Warwick North Little League baseball fields shortly after 8 p.m. Thursday after receiving a "report of a juvenile in possession of a firearm," the Warwick Police Department said in a media release.

"Officers arrived on scene and spoke with several juveniles, including a juvenile of interest," the release said. "During the investigation, officers learned that a firearm may have been discarded in the immediate area."

Warwick police and Rhode Island State Police with state police dogs "conducted an extensive search of the area late into the evening," according to the release.

Police returned Friday to continue the search.

"During that search, a firearm was located discarded in a bush," the release said.

"The investigation involving the juvenile remains ongoing," according to the release. "At this time, there is no threat to public safety. The firearm is believed to have been in the possession of only the involved juvenile and is not believed to have been used in any violent incident."
