This week, it was revealed that The CW is in talks to air a Wizard of Oz-based drama titled Dorothy Must Die.
The show comes from Heroes creator Tim Kring, as well as producers Nora Kay Foster and Adam Armus – the latter of whom will serve as the head writer. Based on an upcoming young adult novel of the same name, the story is set in present day, 80 years after Dorothy was supposed to have come home. Instead, she has remained in Oz, transforming into a fascist dictator who rules the land with an iron fist with the help of her henchman - the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion. However, her rule is contested when another young woman from Kansas arrives via tornado and is told that she is destined to lead the people of Oz and reclaim the land from Dorothy’s grasp.
This newest Wizard of Oz-themed project is actually one of many currently in development. Syfy is still working on a gritty reboot of the property, while Warner Bros. is putting together an Oz series that it has compared to Game of Thrones. And even stranger yet, a few of weeks back we learned that CBS is developing a Wizard of Oz medical drama.
The property’s recent resurgence can most likely be attributed to the success of Sam Raimi’s Oz the Great and Powerful earlier this year, but whatever the case may be, we’re certain to see some sort of reimagining of the classic tale – and possibly several – on TV very soon.
I’ll inform you on how Dorothy Must Die is coming along once I learn more.
