Varsity Golf: Mount St. Charles Defeats Woonsocket, 159-267
The Villa Novans show signs of improvement, but the Mounties stay unbeaten.
Woonsocket played its best round of the year, but Brad Auclair’s one-over-par 36 helped Mount St. Charles past the Villa Novans, 159-267, May 3 in Harrisville.
Senior Dan Foster and freshman Tom Crudele slid in behind Auclair with 40 strokes apiece, and junior Ryan Berard walked into the Country View clubhouse with an eight-over-par 43 for Mount St. Charles.
The Mounties are now 4-0-1 in league play. After defeating Burrillville, 155-180, and North Smithfield (1-6-0), 155-183, April 25, Mount St. Charles picked up its third victory, downing Smithfield, 163-177, April 27 in Esmond.

However, the Mounties also matched up with Cumberland that day, and the Clippers played Mount St. Charles to a 163-163 draw.
“I don’t care to tie, but in that scenario, it was a very good ending,” said Michael Masterson, head coach of the Mounties. “Both teams played very well.”

Before they dealt with Mount St. Charles April 27, the Clippers (6-0-1) kicked the season off with a 164-268 victory against the Villa Novans at Kirkbrae. Lincoln also topped Woonsocket, 165-268, April 25, dropping WHS to 0-2 in league play.
But scores continued to rise for Woonsocket, and the Villa Novans record fell to 0-4 April 27, with losses to Ponaganset (2-3-0), 177-271, and North Smithfield, 190-271.
They slipped to 0-5-0 Tuesday, but head coach John Theroux believes this group of underclassmen can begin to turn things around for Woonsocket.
“I haven’t grasped a ceiling. I don’t think that there is one. I think that they can continue to improve and get better, and the kids have a lot of great ideas,” Theroux said.
“I do think that these kids have enough heart. They like playing and they practice enough that they can make [Woonsocket] more competitive.”
Sophomore Brian Cahill (64,) sophomore Matt Brennan (67,) junior Matt Dufaut (67) and junior Mike Plasse (69) got it going Tuesday, and they’ll look to lower those scores again May 4 against Burrillville (2-3-0) and Smithfield (2-3-0) in Bellingham, MA.
The Mounties return to Country View May 5 to host Lincoln (4-1-0) and Ponaganset.
