Woonsocket Baseball: Villa Novans Down Spartans 6-3

On a cool and cloudy Wednesday morning, two teams vying for second place in the division met in Woonsocket.

The Villa Novans grabbed a four-run lead in the first inning and held on to defeat the rallying Scituate Spartans, 6-3, April 20 in Woonsocket. Brandon Perrico pitched a complete game for the Villa Novans and he added a run-scoring single to boost Woonsocket to its fifth straight win in league play.

Andreas Brackett also chipped in with an RBI-single for the Villa Novans, and the junior first baseman later scored a run to help Woonsocket improve to 5-1 in the division. The Spartans fell to 4-2 with the loss, but they did not go down without a fight Wednesday.

Senior Domenic Antonelli got the Scituate offense going with an RBI-single in the second inning, driving in sophomore Scott Iacobucci. The Spartans then scored twice in the third inning and threatened again in the fourth, but Perrico stranded two runners in scoring position to preserve the one-run advantage.

Neither team plated another run before the sixth, when Brackett picked up his third hit of the day, doubling over the head of Scituate center fielder Shane Lynch.

Brackett came around to score on an infield single by Cody L'Heureux, and the sophomore second basemen eventually followed Brackett across the plate with Woonsocket’s final run.

L'Heureux’s hit was the last of seven surrendered by Scituate’s John Iacona. The senior right-hander tossed six innings for the Spartans, settling down after a rocky first to go the distance against the Villa Novans.

Perrico also gave up seven hits, but he closed things down with a 1-2-3 seventh, ending the game with his ninth strike out.

“We’ve still got to work on a few things, but I’m very pleased so far with the effort, and I’m pleased with the results,” said John Marsella, head coach of the Villa Novans.

His team will look for more success Friday, April 22, when Woonsocket hosts the winless Davies Patriots.
