1. Graniteville man charged with attempted murder in June shooting (wrdw.com) — A Graniteville man has been charged with attempted murder after a June 11 shooting in Aiken that left one person wounded near York Street and Rutland Drive by the Sunoco. Investigators recovered shell casings across several nearby locations, and the victim was treated at a hospital. A juvenile is also listed as a suspect in the incident report.
   

2. Burying hot radioactive waste in ‘boreholes' mentioned in plan for SC nuclear campus (thestate.com) — State leaders are pursuing a nuclear innovation campus at the Savannah River Site near Aiken, and one proposal mentions studying deep boreholes that could potentially hold high-level radioactive waste. Supporters tout billions in investment and thousands of jobs, while critics warn South Carolina could become a dumping ground and question whether local geology and residents would accept such a plan.
   

3. 14-year-old Greenville girl becomes SC's first civics bee champion (newsfromthestates.com) — Aiken is on the civics map, with local student Skylar Jones among South Carolina’s finalists and one of the regional qualifying contests held right in Aiken. A Greenville student ultimately won the new statewide National Civics Bee, after middle schoolers tackled tough questions and presented solutions to community issues ranging from crime to rural internet access.
   

4. Notice of Sale C/A No: 2022-CP-02-01919 BY VIRTUE (postandcourier.com) — A foreclosure auction for property near Wagener will be held at the Aiken County Judicial Center in downtown Aiken on August 3, 2026, at 11 a.m. The sale involves a home on Orangeburg Drive and will be for cash, with bidders required to bring a 5% deposit and accept the property subject to taxes, easements, and other recorded restrictions.
   

5. Janelle Sloan Heuberger, devoted educator (capegazette.com) — A longtime educator and book lover who settled in Aiken’s Dunbarton Oaks neighborhood in 2020 has died at 79, leaving many local friends and family grieving. Her decades of teaching math and science, love of libraries and book clubs, and deep commitment to students and relatives are remembered as defining parts of a generous, community-minded life.
