1. Charleston County School leaders are becoming substitute teachers. Here's why. (aikenstandard.com) — Charleston County School District's central office staff, including the superintendent, will each spend four days this year working as substitute teachers in local classrooms and childcare programs. Leaders hope the move will ease staffing gaps, save some money, and, more importantly, give decision-makers firsthand insight into teachers' daily challenges as they test new strategies to boost student achievement and attendance.

Charleston Regional Aviation Authority elects Hill, Salmonsen and Sanyal as 2026–27 officers (travelprnews.com) — Leadership at the Charleston Regional Aviation Authority, which oversees Charleston International Airport, is set for 2026–27 with Helen T. Hill elected chair, Charlie Salmonsen vice-chair, and Ravi Sanyal secretary-treasurer. Their tourism, real estate, and legal backgrounds will shape decisions on air service, airport investment, and infrastructure that affect how Charleston residents and visitors travel in and out of the region.
   

3. Charleston reviews plans for Clements Ferry Road subdivisions, Parker's Kitchen (abcnews4.com) — City officials are scrutinizing three new projects along Clements Ferry Road in Charleston, including two large subdivisions and a Parker's Kitchen, before any building permits are issued. Residents worry the hundreds of planned homes will worsen already difficult traffic, especially left turns, while the city's Technical Review Committee works through conservation rules and infrastructure concerns in this fast-growing Cainhoy Peninsula area.
   

4. Charleston County names first female director of 911 center (live5news.com) — Charleston County has appointed longtime public safety communicator Allyson Burrell as the first female director of the county's Consolidated Emergency Communications Center, which handles all 911 calls for the area. After years as interim and deputy, she'll now guide technology upgrades, staffing plans, and pay and funding discussions that directly affect how quickly and effectively emergency responders reach Charleston residents.
   

5. Reader photo pick of the week: Waves (postandcourier.com) — A Charleston resident's ocean-wave photo has been chosen as this week's winning reader image, and all submissions are also being considered for The Post and Courier's annual My Charleston magazine. Locals are now invited to send in "best dressed" photos by Tuesday at noon for a chance to be featured online and in print, following the paper's regular Friday-through-Sunday photo schedule.
