Board Names New Director of Special Education

Catherine Ashton replaces former director Anita Beatty.

The board of trustees has named Catherine (Cathy) Ashton as director of special education for the School District of Pickens County. Ashton has served as interim director since the death of Anita Beatty in early January.

“I am deeply humbled to be able to serve students with special needs along with the teachers, support staff and parents in the district,” said Ashton. “Amidst the pressure of difficult challenges that lie before us, collaboration is most needed.    It is my hope that change will continue to flourish in the areas of perception, attitude, focus, and results.    Anita Beatty is very much missed, and my support staff is committed to maintaining her high standards of service to others.”

Ashton began her career in education in 1979 at South Brunswick High School in North Carolina.    She taught special education in several states before becoming an assistant principal in 2005. She came to the School District of Pickens County in 2008 as an assistant principal at Pickens Middle School.
