Clemson Student Drowns in Lake Hartwell

A 21-year-old international Clemson University student died Monday night after drowning in Lake Hartwell, officials said.

Prashanth Elangovan, 21, went swimming with friends Monday night when he went under water and drowned, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said in a press release. The students were swimming near the 12 Mile Recreation Area in Clemson Monday evening. 

Kelley said the drowning occurred at approximately 6:24 p.m. Elangovan was retrieved from the lake by the Pickens County Water Response Team and transported to the Oconee Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 11:53 p.m.

The case remains under investigation by the Department of Natural Resources and the Pickens County Coroner's office, according to the release.
