Easley Woman Laments Lack of County Leash Laws

Woman distraught after loose dog kills her cat, but county administrator says leash law is impractical.

A local woman said she is concerned over the county's lack of leash laws after a loose dog killed her pet cat on her property.

Linda Day, who lives in the Easley area, said the death of her cat, Chester, was "horrible. The whole thing is just like a bad dream," she told The Greenville News.

The dog, running loose with a small pack, managed to get through Day's screened-in porch to kill Chester, whom Day had had and loved for two years.

"I just want justice because this cat was just precious to me and he wasn’t harming anyone,” she told the newspaper. “He was right there in my porch in his safe haven.”

The guilty canine has since been euthanized after its owners reportedly turned it over to Animal Control. County Administrator Chappell Hurst said that owners are supposed to control their pets, but said a leash law in such a rural county would be too hard to police day to day given the high number of calls and the lack of sufficient staffing.

“It’s about 1,000 calls a month for five officers,” Hurst told the newspaper. “These guys are extremely busy. ... When you look at the total spectrum of what they’re doing it’s amazing that they can do what they do.”
