Green Wave Coach Excited For Rivalry Game
Easley High School Football Coach Grayson Powell says he can't wait to see how the EHS Stadium looks on August 23 when the Green Wave take on Pickens.
βSo far, weβre undefeated and we feel good about that,β Easley High Head Football Coach Grayson Howell says with a smile when asked about this yearβs season, his first leading the Green Wave.
βTo have been able to be here since February, thatβs just been invaluable,β Howell said. βTo be able to create expectations in February instead of in June or in May has just been great. High school coaches, head coaches, when thereβs turnover, you donβt get that opportunity very often.
βYou usually have to finish your year out where you are, fight, scratch and claw to find ways to get to your new school and try to put things in place, spring practice is a headache, you feel like youβre going back and forth between two places,β he continued. βTo be able to be here, unencumbered, for that time period has been really nice, to build relationships with our players, to just get to know them. I knew by April who we could depend on and who we couldnβt. You start working on those kids instead of finding out in July or August. Itβs been nice.β

When considering whether to take the job, Howell didnβt have an opportunity to see the Green Wave in action.
βI knew they had won some games,β he said. βIβd never met Chad (Stewart). I kind of knew what they were doing offensively through the grapevine or whatever. I hadnβt seen them play β I think maybe Iβd seen some highlights of C.J. somewhere, thatβs really it.β

Howell said heβs always loved the area and had wished to return to the Upstate since attending college.
βThat was the draw,β he said. βI knew Easley was a good school. Iβd actually substitute taught there when I was in college. I knew some of the people, knew Tim Mullis, our principal and Chris Carter, our athletic director, had relationships with them. I just felt like itβd be a good fit for me and my family.β
Howell said he feels good about most of the Green Wave.
βWeβre not deep,β he said. βWeβre going to have to figure out a way to develop that, either with our younger guys or some of our older guys who havenβt gotten a lot of reps before β theyβre going to be seniors who just havenβt played much. Depth is the issue. Any time you have a team of 55-60 instead of a team of 75-80, youβre missing some key backups in there somewhere.β
βI feel like our front line talent is good enough to win some games,β Howell said. βWeβll try to make sure we put them in positions to be successful β theyβll actually have to go do the work on Fridays.β
Howell said he keeps hearing the word βspreadβ when it comes to the kind of game he runs.
βI donβt think weβre a spread team,β he said. βI kind of term it a βmulti-formation one back team.βΒ Weβre going to usually have a tight end on the field, usually have three receivers in the game and one tailback. Weβre going to try to formation people. Weβre going to try to do things in a kind of βHurry upβ manner, as long as it benefits us, try to dictate tempo. Β
βDefensively, weβll look a lot like we did last year,β Howell continued. βOur staff has pretty much stayed the same, the verbage is staying the same on that side of the ball.Β Defensively, there hasnβt been any transition for them, other than just younger guys having to step up.
βWe want to play hard and play fast and play smart,β he said. βWeβll do what we can as coach and staff to put that in them, then theyβve got to go do it.β
The Green Waveβs first game with Howell as coach is the rivalry game with Pickens on August 23.
βThatβs good and bad,β Howell said. βIβd like to have another week to prepare. Iβm sure Chad would like to have another week to prepare over in Pickens too.Β The good thing about this rivalry is Iβve got the utmost respect for the guys over there. When you can be a rival and still like the guy standing on the other side, and still play hard, and know that theyβre going to do it the right way β you play football and at the end of it, you go shake your buddyβs hand and wish them well the rest of the year.
βI know this game means a lot to our two communities and itβs going to mean a lot to our players, I hope,β Howell said. βWe wonβt overhype it to the point where we canβt go out and perform, but weβll talk about it being special β I donβt think weβll have to say much. Iβm excited to see what this place is going to look like that night.β
