Morgan Petition Campaign Going Well As Deadline Nears

Tim Morgan’s petition campaign to appear on the ballot as a candidate Pickens County Sheriff is going well, even as the deadline approaches.

 “A lot of the other candidates have had 5-6 weeks to collect signatures, where we’ve only had 1-2,” Morgan said. “It’s a lot of signatures to get in a very short amount of time.

He believes he’ll get the number of signatures he needs – 3,152 – before the deadline, which is Monday at noon.

Morgan says he’s been asked a lot why he didn’t run against Sheriff C. David Stone in the primary.

He says running against his boss “wouldn’t have been the right thing to do.”

“Sheriff Stone hired me, he’s given me all my career opportunities, he’s promoted me,” said Morgan, Stone’s Assistant Sheriff. “To betray that, to bite the hand that has fed me, would have been a very selfish act on my front.”

He believes in the adage that “A House Divided Doesn’t Stand.”

“It would have torn this office apart had I done something in my own personal interest like that,” Morgan said. “It would have demonstrated that I was just looking out for my own best interests and not the best interests of the Sheriff’s office. I think elected officials aren’t supposed to be watching out for themselves, they’re supposed to be watching out for the citizens.

“My refrain is, this is the first opportunity to be on the ballot,” Morgan said.  “All I’m asking for is a chance to be in the race, to have my views and positions heard before November 6. My only avenue to be on the ballot is through petition, so I’m trying to get my signatures.”

Until he’s certified as a candidate, Morgan says it’s too early to talk about what he’d do if elected.

“Once I become a candidate, I think it’d be appropriate to talk about that,” Morgan said.

Petitions for Morgan can be found in Easley at Main Street Diner, Walker’s Furniture, the Minute Diner and the Home Décor Warehouse.

In Pickens, they can be found at Bivvens Hardware, Thomas Realty, Speedway Gun.

Other locations include Garners Hunting and Fishing and Presley’s Automotive in Clemson.

“We’ll be glad to get somebody out to you with a petition,” Morgan said. “Time is of the essence, though. There’s only three more days.”   

He says he’s working with other petition candidates, including the other petition candidate for Sheriff, Stan Whitten.

“I’ve signed Stan’s petition and he’s signed mine,” Morgan said. 

“I think what makes our system work is the choice that voters have,” he said. “I just want to be a candidate, try to verbalize some of my ideas of where the office can go in the future. The voters can check that out and make their choice in November.”
