Six Mile Council Recognizes “Special People”

Four residents recognized for service to town

“We’re recognizing some special people tonight,” said Six Mile Mayor Roy Stoddard at the start of Tuesday’s Six Mile Town Council meeting.

During the meeting, the recipients of the town’s Citizen of the Year, Gene Sanders Six Mile Recreation Department Volunteer of the Year, Six Mile Volunteer Fireman of the Year and Explorer of the Year were recognized.

The resolution of “Recognition and Appreciation” to the four reads as follows:

WHEREAS, the members of the Six Mile Town Council recognize the important contributions of many members of this community; and

WHEREAS, it is also recognized that there are those individuals in our community, that are listed below, who went “above and beyond” in volunteering their time, talent and energies in support of the various activities of the Town; and

WHEREAS, Wilma Burkett was selected as Six Mile’s Citizen of the Year for 2012 for giving unsparingly of her time and for her untiring efforts throughout the year and over a period of many years, serving as a member of the Town Council and still serving as a member of the Town’s Annual Christmas Parade and the Issaqueena Festival Committee; and

WHEREAS, Charlie Yongue was selected as the Gene Sanders Six Mile Recreation Department Volunteer of the Year for 2012 for his untiring efforts to enhance the operation of Ponderosa Park, i.e., built dugout roofs, rebuilt park sign, assembled playground equipment, built picnic shelter and the list goes on; and

WHEREAS, Travis Gilstrap was selected as the Six Mile Volunteer Fireman of the Year for 2012 by his fellow firefighters for his untiring dedication to the Town, his peers and the community and for obtaining his Fire Fighter 2 certification; and

WHEREAS, Justin Durham was selected as Explorer of the Year for 2012 for the Six Mile Volunteer Fire Department for his total dedication and commitment in the operation of the fire department, only missing one meeting when he was hospitalized; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the members of the Six Mile Town Council, meeting in regular session this 8th day of January 2013 express their individual and collective gratitude and respect for Wilma Burkett, Charlie Yongue, Travis Gilstrap and Justin Durham; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this action shall be entered into the permanent records of the Town of Six Mile and that this resolution shall serve as evidence that the Six Mile community at large hereby express their sincere appreciation to our recipients.
