Meeting set for Sept. 6. Candidates for sheriff will take questions from audience.

Solicitor Walt Wilkins III will speak at the next meeting of the Pickens County Taxpayers Association, which is set for 7pm Thursday, September 6.

The meeting will be held at the Farm Bureau on Highway 178, 2.5 miles south of Pickens.

According to PCTA President Dennis Reinert, the three candidates for Pickens County Sheriff have also been invited to the meeting and will take questions from the audience.

The public is invited to attend, Reinert said.

“This past May when we held the Sheriff's debate, additional law enforcement problems were uncovered,” Reinert said. “Comments made by Sheriff Stone as well as other candidates brought to light the failure of the Prosecutor's Office of the 13th Circuit to handle all the cases in a timely manner, which makes our jails overcrowded.

“Law enforcement can cost a great deal of our tax dollars,” Reinert said. “Building a new jail is expensive. “This can lead to prisoners in Pickens County suing the county for overcrowding, being held too long before justice can be served or other reasons. Law suits can be costly. Join us for a discussion on how best to solve these issues.”
