District 5 Director Receives Special Education Administrator Award
Marlene Metts has been a special education teacher, speech pathologist, consultant and the Director of the Office of Exceptional Children at the South Carolina Department of Education.

Marlene Metts, Lexington-Richland School District 5's special services director, has received the 2013 Special Education Administrator Award from the South Carolina Council for Administrators of Special Education.
The award was presented to her in March during the organization’s spring meeting.
Described as an informational guru and problem solver by her colleagues, Metts has been a special education teacher, speech pathologist, consultant and the Director of the Office of Exceptional Children at the South Carolina Department of Education.

She also has served on numerous boards, task forces, committees and professional organizations in the state and nationally.
“Ms. Metts sets an example for strong work ethic and makes herself available to school staff, parents, and colleagues,” according to a SCCASE release. “Among the more important comments shared about Ms. Metts is her advocacy in what she believes in and always doing what is right for the students.”

District Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said, “At District Five, Ms. Metts is someone who is always willing to support and share her knowledge and skills while setting an example of strong work ethic. We are proud of all she has accomplished and congratulate her on this well-deserved award.”
