District 5 Holds Family Literacy Day

A Lexington-Richland School District 5 event has brought the importance of reading and literacy to the forefront for dozens in the community.

More than 100 people attended a family literacy event hosted by the district’s Adult Education department in March.

This year’s Family Literacy Day included free books and hands-on literacy activities for children and workshops for adults on financial literacy, career planning and other skill-building topics. 

Palmetto Health, Midlands Technical College, Project Hope, the Columbia Housing Authority and other businesses provided information to attendees during the event.

“If we agree that knowledge is power, then literacy is the spring from which power flows,” said Dr. Kathie Greer, director of the district’s adult education programs. “This event was a continuation of the work we do every day in this district to focus on the importance of literacy and life-time learning.” 

Adult Education of Lexington and Richland Counties provides offerings year-round, including: Pre-GED, GED, WorkKeys, high school diploma, college and military entrance test preparation and other services.
