Lexington County Museum's Artifact of the Week: Sept. 16-22

Lexington County Museum's Artifact of the Week

This week's artifact is a recently donated item. It is a certificate from the state of S.C. signed by Governor Richard Manning in 1915. It gives Cline Taylor of Gilbert the right to sell liquor.

From 1893, to 1907, the state of S.C. had a monopoly on liquor sales. After this statewide dispensary system failed, some counties went dry while others created local dispensaries. Lexington obtained dispensaries in 1914. Mr. Taylor ran one of these local dispensaries.

See this artifact and more at the Lexington County Museum. Visit www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum for more information.
