  • This Spotted Gar put up a good fight. It was 32" long. Afterword, I returned it to the river to continue its' predatory work of helping to keep fish populations in balance.

  • I ate a lot of prickly pear during my travels to Texas. We have our own here however. Even our own species, the Carolina Prickly Pear.

  • This Red Spider Lily was growing near the bank of the Old Mill pond last year, right about this time in June. I have found them further downstream on the 12 Mile Creek as well.

  • The Indigo Bunting seems to be rare around Lexington, but I saw another a few weeks ago on the 12 Mile Creek. They certainly catch the eye.

  • I am amazed at the number of dragon fly species in our area. This is a Black-Shouldered Spinyleg. Its' colors are incredible and every grain of sand can be seen through its' gossamer thin wings.

  • A Five-Lined Skink guards her eggs. They look huge next to her because reptile eggs have soft, leathery shells. They absorb water from the rotting log in which she has laid them, making them swell up.

  • This butterfly is known as the Red Spotted Purple. I haven't seen many of them in this area, but they are quite striking.
