Lexington County Museum's Artifact of the Week: June 9-15

Highlighted artifact from the collection of the Lexington County Museum.

The highlighted artifact this week is a swing butter churn or butter worker that dates from the second half of the nineteenth century.  This churn was used at a plantation in northwestern Orangeburg County.  Swing churns work by getting the cream inside to churn by hitting the ends of the container.  They were very efficient and could be adapted to mechanical power easily.

See this artifact and more at the Lexington County Museum, located at 231 Fox Street in downtown Lexington. Visit www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum for more information.
