Lexington County Museum's Artifact of the Week: Nov. 25-Dec. 1

Artifact of the week from the collections of the Lexington County Museum.

This week's artifact from the collections of the Lexington County Museum is a 1955 Harrington and Richardson Model 999 Sportsman revolver. It fires .22 caliber bullets and had a 9 round chamber.  It was given to Governor George Bell Timmerman, Jr. upon taking the governor's office in 1955 and features Timmerman's name inscribed on the barrel.  Timmerman served one term and was the first governor to come from Lexington County.  He later served as a judge in the Eleventh District until retiring in 1984.

See this artifact and more at the Lexington County Museum, located at 231 Fox Street in downtown Lexington. Visit www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum or call 803-359-8369 for more information.  Check back next week for another exciting artifact!

Also, remember that on Dec. 9, the museum will be hosting its 16th Annual Christmas Open House.  Many of the 30 historic houses on the Museum complex will be open and will feature period Christmas decorations during the open house. The event is FREE to the public!  Light refreshments, including hot apple cider and gingerbread, will be served and live music will be featured.  Hope to see you there!
