Lexington County Museum's Artifact of the Week: Oct. 28 - Nov. 3

Artifact of the week from the collection of the Lexington County Museum

This week's artifact is a photograph of the students of the Lexington Graded School in 1889.

The children are in front of the Confederate Monument that was then located on the northwest corner of modern day South Lake and East Main Street, just east of where the courthouse was located. You can see the Simmons-Harth-Gantt House (which still stands) in the background. Paul Brodie, the uncle of the donor, was the principle and is pictured standing on the right.

The Lexington Graded School had grades one through eight. Tuition cost 75 cents per month for grades one through three, $1 per month for grades four through six, and $1.50 per month for grades seven and eight.
