Lexington Runs To Feed The Hungry

The 12th Annual Lexington Race Against Hunger is Saturday morning, February 25th. Get up and get moving with me to help feed the hungry.

The very first official race I participated in was the Lexington Race Against Hunger in 2009.  I was a total newbie in the world of running as I had just started in September of 2008.  The forecast for that February morning called for rain and Ben Tanner and his colleagues did not get it wrong.  It didn’t just rain for 6.2 miles through the town of Lexington, it poured.  And I loved every minute of it!  I came in fourth in my age group and was officially hooked on running.

On Saturday morning, February 25, I’ll be running in the 12th Annual Lexington Race Against Hunger because it is one of my favorite races and all the proceeds go to a very important cause, helping to feed the hungry.  I also love this race because it is hosted by Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church located at the entrance to my neighborhood.  I can roll out of bed and be at the start line in 5 minutes.

It is a very well organized race from registration to packet pick-up to the finish line and post-race festivities. Race Director, Ray Renner, with help from 150 volunteers does a tremendous job of coordinating the event and making it a successful one. The attendance has increased every year and now attracts well over 1000 participants coming from all over the state and beyond.  Every year, I love seeing friends and familiar faces from the past three years.

One of the main attractions for LRAH is that it is considered to be one of the more challenging 10K events in the Midlands.  The 6.2 mile course includes several hills including the gradual incline going up Main Street into the town of Lexington.  Participants can choose from a 1 mile fun run, 5K run or fitness walk or 10K distance and all receive a quality long-sleeve cotton t-shirt.

Post-race refreshments include water, fresh fruit, bagels and hot pizza at the finish line. There are also bounce houses for the kiddos and awards are presented in the gym beginning at 9:50 am.  Spaghetti suppers are available for purchase for $5 at race packet pick-up on Friday afternoon beginning at 4:00 pm with all proceeds going to feed the hungry.

This event has something for everyone no matter your fitness level and there are many opportunities to volunteer as well.  I am very proud to participate in a race event that has donated $238,859.16 to charities that help feed the hungry.

See you at the finish line,

Beth
