Candidate Profile: Phil Perry, House District 39

Phil Perry, a Clemson Extension agent, faces two challengers for the Republican nomination for the S.C. House District 39 seat.

It's a three-way race for the House District 39 seat in western Lexington County and Saluda County. 

Three Republicans are running for the seat, which will be left vacant by retiring Rep. Marion Frye. No Democrats are running.

Name: Phil Perry

Age: 59

Occupation: Clemson University Extension Agent for Saluda, Lexington and Richland counties

Prior political experience: First time seeking political office, but has held offices in the Saluda County Cattlemen's Association, the Lexington County Cattlemen's Association, the Richland County Cattlemen's Association, the Saluda County Forestry Association, the Central Milk Producers Association, the Saluda Quail Hunter's Association, the Saluda Farm- City Committee and the South Carolina Jersey Cattle Association. Also served as an advisor to the Saluda County Chamber of Commerce and the Saluda County Economic Development Committee.

Family: Married to Kaye Peebles Perry for 32 years.  Two children: Sam (28) and Sarah (23). 

Education: Graduated from Saluda High School in 1971.  Received a bachelor's degree in dairy science from Clemson University in 1975.  Received a master's in agriculture from Clemson University in 1982.

Why are you running?

I have been a public servant for 37 years as a Clemson Extension agent.  I would like to continue serving the same people in a different capacity.  I truly enjoy helping people. I am a giver, not a taker. 


What are the most important issues you would address if elected?

1. Creating jobs and expanding economic development. 

2. Improving infrastructure.

3. Making government agencies more accountable.

4. Improving education.

 
Would you change how District 39 is represented? How?

I would work hard to serve the families of House District 39.  I understand the needs of our district.  I have a foundation of conservative, Christian values and a strong desire to serve.

Have you heard any repeated concerns from residents of District 39?

Yes, jobs and the economy.  I will work hard to attract businesses and create job opportunities for the residents of House District 39.

Anything else you would like to add?

I have what it takes and will give what it takes to represent the fine people of House District 39.  I will work tirelessly to improve the quality of life here in our community.  Please vote for Phil Perry on June 12 in the Republican Primary!
