Democrat Announces Run for Court Clerk
Nurse and community activist Joan Guy to take her shot in Republican-dominated Lexington County.

Local community activist Joan Waggoner Guy, a Democrat, launched her campaign Wednesday for Lexington County Clerk of Court at the new Lexington County Courthouse.
A small crowd of supporters was present to hear Guy kick off the official start to her campaign to unseat Republican Beth Carrigg.
Guy has been a resident of Lexington for the past 25 years. She currently works for the State of South Carolina and Lexington Medical Center in the nursing field and hopes to bring that care and compassion to the County Clerk's office, she said.
Guy spoke on the need for new ideas and creativity in the Clerk’s Office and she believes she is the right woman to take on that task. She also spoke on the need for more community outreach and community involvement from the county clerk.
"One thing I have learned along the way is that men get in politics for a career," she said. "Women get in politics because they’re mad about the issues and want to make a change."
The official filing period to run for office begins today. Though its unclear whether Guy will face any Democratic challengers, She would have a tough slog winning her seat in Republican-dominated Lexington County.
"I love a challenge, I love a challenge," Guy said. "I've got lots of friends, lots of support … we can [win]. I'd like to see some new ideas in the office and someone who can think ouside-the-box a little bit more. I can do that."
