LET'S KEEP LEXINGTON HISTORY IN LEXINGTON - THE INDIAN HEAD IS LEXINGTON'S "STATE AND NATIONAL" TREASURE
THE INDIAN HEAD, located in Lexington County, is the topic of many discussions these days, local, state and national discussions. It is one of the most important Native American discoveries for South Carolina in the last 250 years. Many enthusiast and professionals are starting to join in the conversation. THE STATE newspaper published an article with partial information to give initial recognition to the discovery. Additional articles will be published.
Recently, Margaret G. Waters, considered to be an expert by some in the matters of this type of research (Orangeburgh), published a blog, "Where was Indian Head located?", on her website at Orangeburghplats.com in which she states that she has not been able to locate The Indian Head, Davis plat after 12 years of consideration. She then makes a case to show that The Indian Head and Indian Branch are not located in Lexington County. In fact, she states that she does not really know but suggests a location and provides a random circle on a map where she believes they were located. She admits she has no idea of where it actually was which is evidenced by the fact that the surname "Davis" appears on the same map yet she does not seem aware of it. Perhaps, in analysis she overlooked it. We all make mistakes. She presents "as evidence" a case of "not knowing" in support that many other researchers and THE STATE got the location wrong. Motivation for the post is unclear.
BPBHRS is attaching to this blog the actual map shown by Waters but has added highlighted comments to help correct the erroneous information she posted on her site. This blog at LEXINGTON PATCH is an attempt ONLY to keep history accurate as documented and in this case well documented. In fairness to Ms. Waters, she did not have access to all the information and research by BPBHRS, forensic historian Michael Jeffcoat and THE STATE. This documentation requires forensic research to acquire some of it. Most of the supporting documentation is part of state and federal archives and is available to anyone with the time and skills to locate it.

A good rule of thumb in historical research and publication is to avoid publishing what you do not know, especially when it is well documented by others. The location of THE INDIAN HEAD and INDIAN HEAD BRANCH is irrefutable.
It was important to write this blog "to set the record straight" so that this important history is recorded accurately and not diminished by the publication of incomplete and erroneous research.
