LEXINGTON COUNTY ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES EMERGE

PART OF LOWER LEXINGTON COUNTY EMERGES AS AN IMPORTANT AND FUTURE SITE FOR ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECTS

Artifacts dating from 900 AD to 1300 AD and the  1700s are revealing evidence of Lexington County's oldest inhabitants. These are important clues to the history of a special area of South Carolina and the United States.

Recently, historic recognition of the oldest house in Lexington County, near the Orangeburg/Lexington county line, cleared the way for additional research that is revealing multiple colonial sites with structures and sites dating between 1725 and 1770. An additional house has been discovered which possibly dates to about 1765. Several houses and structures built between 1800 and 1850 are slated to receive historic recognition in the coming months. These include the Martin-Jeffcoat House, c 1842.
