This week's artifact is perfect for the back-to-school season although its a little larger than most of the other artifacts. It's our ca. 1815 schoolhouse. This structure, originally located in the Oak Grove east of Lexington, is typical of field schools, which were named mainly because they were often built in worn out fields. The school year in the antebellum period followed the agricultural seasons with school generally starting at 8:30 and ending around 3. A typical field school had around 10 to 25 students.
See this artifact and more at the Lexington County Museum, located at 231 Fox Street in downtown Lexington. Visit www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum for more information.
