This week's highlighted artifact is a secretary made around 1840 possibly by Col. West Caughman (1787-1864) here in Lexington. It is made of white pine with a mahogany veneer. The glass appears to be a replacement but the knobs and drawers are original to the piece. This piece was bought at an estate sale of one of Caughman's descendents.
See this artifact and more at the Lexington County Museum, located at 231 Fox Street in downtown Lexington. Visit www.lex-co.sc.gov/museum for more information.
