Today's highlighted artifact is a circa 1840 eight sided shell edge earthenware platter with painted blue edge. Although this piece was almost certainly not owned by the Fox family, many shards of shell edge plates, saucers, platters, etc. have been found near the original site of John Fox's kitchen. Shell edged wares were the cheapest English earthenware available with color decoration in America and were therefore relatively common in households. These shell edge wares usually came in either blue or green.
