This week's artifact is a braided rug made by Marie Coogler Metze in the late 1800s. Metze was born near Ballentine and lived in Seven Oaks after her marriage. It was probably made from excess cloth or scraps. Hand-braided rugs were common in 19th century homes until the advent of machine made carpets and rugs.
