Lexington County Treasurer Race Gets Interesting
County Council chairman Bill Banning will challenge incumbent Jim Eckstrom in Republican primary.

Lexington County Council chairman Bill Banning has thrown his hat into the ring to challenge fellow Republican Jim Eckstrom for Lexington County Treasurer, The State reports.
The two men, with contrasting styles and philosophies, will vie in the June 12 primary.
"Banning is stressing 'better service, better security and better cooperation with other elected officials,'" the article said.
Eckstrom told the paper: "The only issue in this race is a division in county government between those who want higher taxes and budgets versus those who favor less spending and lower taxes."
Banning's announcement of his run, which comes after 14 years on Council, came Thursday as the filing deadline for state and local offices comes to a close. Candidates who wish to run for office have until noon Friday to officially file to run in their party's primary.
