Lexington Town Council member tabbed to head Women in Municipal Government for 2012

Lexington Town Council member Kathy Maness was elected Friday afternoon as 2012 president of the Women in Municipal Government constituency group.

Maness's selection was announced at a luncheon in Phoenix, Ariz., as part of the National League of Cities' Congress of Cities.

Maness, who was in Phoenix, was unavailable for comment Friday evening.

The group serves as a women's advocacy group for municipal employees and officials within the National League of Cities.

WIMG also sponsors the Women’s Leadership Award program which recognizes a female local official for unique and outstanding leadership in local government.

WIMG was formed in 1974 to serve as a forum for communication and networking among women municipal officials and their colleagues, according to a press release.

"The group strives to raise awareness about issues of concern to women, encourages women to seek public office in their communities and helps ensure women hold leadership positions within the NLC," the release said.
