If you're on I-20 and take the Longs Pond Road exit and drive toward Lexington, you cannot help but notice a very large, expansive facility. It employs more than 2000 locals and is one of the key employers to Lexington and the area.
It's Michelin's tire manufacturing facility, which actually consists of two plants, one for making tires for passenger cars, and the other plant produces a specialization of the tire maker's offerings, their 5-ton Earthmover tires, which are used for construction sites, mines, and quarries.
Michelin has long been known as a high-quality tire maker and technology plays an instrumental role in their success. They also believe in supporting the local community in technology education. Last year, Michelin North America donated $60,000 to the Lexington County School District One Educational Foundation, which funded a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Lab at the Meadow Glen Middle School. The lab supports the STEM Academy offered at all Lexington District One middle schools.
STEM is part of a larger comprehensive program, the district’s Schools of the Future —Now! initiative, which promotes a high-performance learning culture and high academic expectations for all students.
Michelin North America has their corporate headquarters in Greenville, which is part of the Upstate South Carolina Alliance group of companies operating in the Alliance high-tech Automotive sector.
