Santorum Announces State County-Level Leadership

Rick Santorum's campaign for the Republican presidential nomination appears to be going nowhere in South Carolina with less than a month before the crucial primary takes place Jan. 21.

Either because of that -- or in spite of it -- the candidate on Friday announced his county-by-county leadership inSouth Carolina, dozens upon dozens of people the campaign will look to to whip up the grassroots in the waning days of the state campaign.

The campaign in South Carolina will be led by State Chairman Gresham Barrett, a former Third District congressman and former gubernatorial candidate from Westminster. Santorum's County Captain Chairman will be state Sen. Greg Gregory of Lancaster.

"I am honored to receive this tremendous outpouring of support from such an esteemed group of Palmetto State community leaders," Santorum said in a release. "Through their hard work, we will be able to capitalize on our growing momentum in the early primary states, and catapult our campaign to victory in the First-in-the-South Primary."

He and his troops will have to work fast. In the most recent Marist/NBC News poll, the religious, social conservative was polling dead last in the state, with just two percent support. That's the same as in October, despite the candidate being one of the most frequent visitors to the state among the Republican field.

"I am committed to winning the South Carolina primary and I look forward to working with this terrific team as we put our plan for victory into action over the coming weeks," Santorum said.
