Senator: No More State Symbols

State Senator Harvey Peeler says enough is enough amid more pressing matters. Lexington Senator Jake Knotts says to lighten up.

Upstate Senator Harvey Peeler (R-Cherokee) says the state has enough symbols. With nearly 50 of them (state dog, state flower, state song, etc.), Peeler says the state has more press matters, according to this report.

The tipping point for Peeler? "Last year a 9-year-old Lexington girl whose family sells collard greens asked her Senator, Jake Knotts, to make the leafy green the state’s official vegetable," the report said.

"(Peeler) said his bill is necessary because it is difficult to say no to young students, but that all the time spent on frivolous bills adds up when issues like the economy and unemployment need immediate attention," the report continued.

Knotts said to lighten up. And besides, he added, the symbols are a good thing. “It really doesn’t take much time and it's things that we should be proud of in this state,” Knotts said.
