Town of Lexington Local Question (Referendum):
"Shall the Department of Revenue be authorized to issue temporary permits in the Town of Lexington for a period not to exceed twenty-four hours to allow the sale of beer and wine sales at permitted off-premises locations without regard to the days or hours of sales?"
A yes vote would allow grocery stores and other retail outlets in the Town of Lexington to sell beer and wine on Sunday, so long as it is not consumed on the premises. Sales of alcoholic beverages in bars and restaurants, which are already allowed on Sunday, would be unaffected. Sales of hard liquor would continue to be prohibited on Sundays.
If passed by a simple majority, Mayor Randy Halfacre said Monday night that it would require an ordinance with two readings before becoming law. He reckoned that if the voters approve the referendum, the Council can pass the enabling ordinance and allow Sunday sales shortly after the New Year.
If the referendum fails, nothing need be done, and the current law will remain in place, he said.
